Review of Gas Regulatory Framework by Federal Government

On 30 June 2025, the Federal Government announced a review of the national gas market regulatory framework.

The review will assess the effectiveness of existing regulatory mechanisms and long-term policy settings and reforms for Australia’s gas markets in delivering secure, affordable energy and the transition to net zero.

The focus areas identified in the Gas Market Review Consultation Paper include a review of domestic gas supply, gas pricing, market transparency and conduct, competition, the impact on LNG exports and the role and governance arrangements of market bodies such as the Australian Energy Market Operator. The review will assess whether stronger or more targeted measures are required to secure domestic gas supply and ease current supply pressures.

The consultation period for submissions by industry and stakeholders runs until 15 August 2025.
