With effect from 1 July 2025, the Department of Energy, Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety (DEMIRS) has been reformed as the Department of Mines, Petroleum and Exploration (DMPE).
This returns the Department back to its focus on the resources sector. In adding Exploration into the title, it gives critical recognition to the exploration and junior minerals sector and its importance in the development of new mining projects.
This is part of the reform of WA Government departments announced by the WA Premier earlier this year. The broader responsibilities of energy policy will be moved to the Department of Energy and Economic Diversification and industry regulation and safety will be moved to the Department of Local Government, Industry Regulation and Safety. Full implementation is expected by 1 January 2026.
